L'abbaye cistercienne d'Hauterive a été fondée en 1138 par Guillaume de Glâne, un seigneur local. Par le don de ses terres, il permit l'établissement du nouveau monastère et fit appel à des moines de Cherlieu (Haute-Saône, Jura français) pour y débuter la vie monastique.
Hauterive fut elle-même amenée à essaimer à Kappel (située dans l'actuel canton de Zurich) en 1185, mais cette communauté se dispersa en 1527, en raison de la Réforme.
L'abbaye d'Hauterive connut des périodes florissantes ou de déclin, soumise en cela aux aléas de l'histoire religieuse et politique de la région, jusqu'à sa suppression en 1848, lors de la guerre du Sonderbund.
Après une interruption de 91 ans au cours de laquelle elle hébergea successivement l'École d'agriculture cantonale puis l'École Normale, elle reprit vie en 1939, grâce à l'arrivée de moines autrichiens venus de l'abbaye de Wettingen-Mehrerau (Vorarlberg).
A l'aube du XXIème siècle, l'abbaye compte une vingtaine de moines originaires de toute la Suisse ou de l'étranger, en sorte que les trois grandes cultures nationales s'y trouvent pleinement représentées.
Depuis le 16 mai 1994, c'est Dom Mauro-Giuseppe Lepori qui en est l'abbé.

A Brief History
The Cistercian Abbey of Hauterive was founded in 1138, by Guillaume de Glâne, a local lord. By the gift of his land, he allowed the establishment of the new monastery and called on the monks of Cherlieu (Haute-Saône, French Jura) to start up monastic life.
Hauterive was called to expand and form a community in Kappel (situated in what is now the Canton of Zurich) in 1185, but this foundation was dispersed in 1527, because of the Reformation.
The Abbey of Hauterive has known flourishing times and times of decline, due to the uncertainties of the religious and political history of the region, up until its suppression in 1848, at the time of the Sonderband war.
After an interruption of 91 years, during which the buildings were successively used by the Cantonal Agricultural School and the Teacher's Training College, it took life again in 1939, thanks to the arrival of some Austrian monks, who came from the Abbey of Wettingen-Mehrerau (Vorarlberg).
In the dawn of the XXIIst century, the Abbey counts around twenty monks from all parts of Switzerland and abroad, which means that three great cultures are fully represented.
From May 16th 1994, Dom Mauro-Giuseppe Lepori is the Abbot.
