Who are we ?
Our Abbey belongs to the
Order of Citeaux (Common Observance). It is situated 7 kms from
Fribourg (Switzerland). Built on a meander of the Sarine (river) it
occupies a typically enchantress Cistercian site, where nature
realises a happy harmony between water, vegetation and stone. In
fact, it takes its name (alta riva, in Latin, "high bank")
from the presence of an imposing cliff sculpted by the waters that
shuts the site, like a insurmountable barrier, the site from the
south.
It is a privileged place
where the monks lead a simple, peaceful life structured by St
Benedict's Rule of which the three principal pillars are : prayer,
work and fraternal life.
Inspired by the Gospels, -
daily meditation of Holy Scripture, takes up a large part - in this
existence nourished by liturgical praise and contemplative silence,
they would like to be a witness and an answer offered to men and
women of our times faced by their deepest interior quest. Through
daily labour, it is also a place of solidarity with all mankind
called to carry creation to its finality and to sanctify time "
for the greater glory of God" (St Benedict's Rule). It is in
this sense that the monks are pleased to welcome guests who wish to
participate in this experience of life.
To be seconded in some of
its tasks the community receives help from two other distinct legal
entities, the Association of the friends of Hauterive and the
Hauterive Foundation.
